JEWISH SERVICE LEARNING A GUIDE FOR YOUTH AND FAMILY EDUCATION         (Summary: 2687)
TERRY KRAUS

Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities. It becomes Jewish service learning (JSL) when such strategies are infused with Jewish sources, values and traditions.

At Congregation Emanu-El, we believe that incorporating JSL into educational settings builds community and provides students with an opportunity to explore and strengthen their Jewish identities while empowering individuals to effect change.

In this comprehensive guide to Jewish service learning, we have compiled extensive information and resources that will lead to successful JSL. The following sections are included:

  • Definition of terms
  • Big Jewish Ideas
  • Congregation Emanu-El’s four focus areas for social justice: hunger, environment, literacy and poverty, or HELP; each area includes
    • Big Jewish idea (example: feeding the hungry)
    • Social justice issue/societal implications (example: in 2007, the number of undernourished people in the world increased by 75 million)
    • Jewish texts (example: from Mishnah Torah 6:6, “If a stranger comes and says, ‘I am hungry. Please give me food,’ we are not allowed to check to see if he is honest or not; we must immediately give him food.”)
    • Suggested reading
    • Actions (example: help at Roosevelt Healthy Children’s Pantry)
    • Reflection Questions (example: Why are we, as Jews, responsible for feeding all those that are hungry?)
  • Examples of classroom routines which help reinforce JSL
  • Bibliography
  • Contact information

[Editor’s note: Please look through the extraordinarily thorough guide; there is a wealth of useful information within the guide that is not listed in the summary above.]
